‼️China has recorded an outbreak of the chikungunya virus: over 5,000 cases of infection, reports The Independent. The dangerous virus, resistant to treatment, is spreading rapidly through mosquito bites. It causes fever, severe joint pain, and can lead to complications affecting the nervous system. The hardest-hit area is Guangdong Province, where over 2,800 new cases have been reported in just the past week. To combat the virus, Chinese scientists have developed a new type of giant predator mosquito that destroys the larvae of Aedes mosquitoes — the primary carriers of the disease. As a result, residents of Guangdong now face two simultaneous threats: a viral infection and a surge of genetically modified insects.
